THE ANC Women’s League yesterday called for tough action against a school psychologist who allegedly raped a pupil.
Standing outside the Pietermaritzburg Magistrates Court, members from the Moses Mabhida region expressed shock at the incident.
The 31-year-old psychologist is accused of raping a seven-year-old boy just before schools closed for the holidays. The boy told his mum what had happened last week and the suspect was arrested.
The case was adjourned until next month for further evidence to be collected. The accused has been suspended and will remain in police custody until he appears in court again.
Sbongile Mchunu of the ANCWL said they were there to show support to the boy’s family.
“Schools are supposed to be safe havens for our children and should be shaping their minds. What has happened at the school is shocking to us as parents and we would like to see the law take its course.”
The psychologist is apparently under investigation for raping three more children.
Education MEC Mthandeni Dlungwane was also in court and told reporters that his office would not allow abuse to occur under its watch. He was set to hold a meeting with school
authorities this afternoon.
