THE KZN government must change the name of the town Melmoth. This is the wish of President Jacob Zuma, who spoke at the drought imbizo at Melmoth Sport Ground on Sunday.
Melmoth was named after Sir Melmoth Osborn, a British commissioner who was stationed at the town in 1893. It falls under Mthonjaneni Municipality in northern KZN.
Zuma said Melmoth used to make locals suffer.
“This man used to ill-treat us but you are still naming the town after him. Aren’t there other people whom you can name it after? When I see this name, I get sick,” he said.
Ndabezinhle Sibiya, spokesman for the office of KZN Premier Senzo Mchunu, said: “Residents have complained about the name before.
“There are procedures to be followed, but government has started to sort out the issue.”
