Houses burnt in Kgapane Bolobedu when residents find girl’s body parts

WHEN Lorraine Makgwahlela (18) went missing three weeks ago, family and friends and later cops searched all over without luck.

Then her body was found last Thursday and all hell broke loose.

Rumours that she had been mutilated spread, and three houses were burned to the ground.

One of the houses belonged to a sangoma and another to one of Lorraine’s fellow grade 12 pupils.

Journalists spoke to Lorraine’s mum, Margaret Makgwahlela (38) from Las Vegas Village in Ga-Kgapane, outside Bolobedu in Limpopo.

She said the girl had visited Lorraine that fateful evening at 8pm and asked to borrow her English textbook.

“Lorraine gave her the book and walked with her out of our house. That was the last time I saw her alive.”

Last Thursday residents embarked on another search and found her body in a cave near a river.

Despite people saying Lorraine’s body was mutilated, police spokeswoman Colonel Ronel Otto said her body parts were intact.

Some people accused the girl of being sent by the sangoma to lure Lorraine out of the house to be abducted.

“We burned their houses because we cannot live with such people in our society. We have the right to live freely and without fear,” said a resident.

The matric pupil will be buried on Sunday.

Otto said public violence and arson are being investigated and an inquest docket had been opened. She said no body parts were found in any house.
