JESUS IS BACK And Roaming The Streets Of Johannesburg – Read More
HEY call him Joseph Jesus.
His real name is Joseph Slabbert (46), and he sits quietly near Park Station in Joburg, waiting for people who come past to make donations.
Journalists watched from a distance as people carrying luggage, on their way to the buses and trains, gave him anything from R1 to R5.
Very few people walk past without giving him something.
After collecting the cash with a warm smile all over his friendly face, Joseph waves them goodbye.
Kgotso Charles (26) told reporters there was a picture of a man who looked like Joseph hanging on the wall in his parents’ house.
“I was told that was Jesus. This man looks just like Him,” he said.
“When Joseph comes, people become happy. He brings memories of how Christ saved us from sin.”
Kgotso told reporters Joseph sits alone in the quiet space in the park, but sometimes he comes out shouting: “I am the good shepherd and I am the son!”
“People share jokes with him. He is really a good guy.”
Passerby Daniel Chitunga (43) said: “This Jesus of Jozi doesn’t like people fighting. He shakes his head as a sign of disapproval when people fight or when he hears others using bad language.
“I have seen on TV and in movies a man like this one acting as Jesus.”
They don’t mind him as he doesn’t harm anyone or cause trouble.
Joseph said he came all the way from London to Mzansi many years ago looking for work.
“There is major poverty here in Joburg,” said Joseph, who lives on the streets.
“I thank people for giving me some money to buy bread.”
